My pet had an accident on my rug. How can I get the stain and odor out?

Removing pet stains and odors requires a combination of enzymes, deodorizers, and a high volume of water. It is not something we recommend trying in the home. The stain you see on the surface is like the tip of the iceberg. The pollutants spread out and sink into the backing of the carpet, making it very difficult to remove without powerful extraction (i.e., vacuuming) tools. When the pet urine dries, it leaves behind crystallized urine salts. These salts are a food source for bacteria. The bacteria feeds on these salts and then emits, or off-gas ammonia which is what causes the terrible odor. The first thing we do to treat these spots is rinse thoroughly with fresh water and then squeegee out as much of the pollution as possible. We then re-saturate the area with specialized enzymes and/or a urine pre-treatment solution and let everything “marinate” for a period of time. The pre-treatment solutions break down the urine salts and then we are able to rinse the salts out. We can guarantee odor removal.

Sometimes the enzymes also remove the stain that is left behind, but not always. The bacteria that feed on the urine salts is highly alkaline and can actually alter the dye in that area. We do have luck removing most stains with a diluted hydrogen peroxide-based product. This often requires several applications. It is like peeling the layers off of an onion. However, in some cases the dyes are damaged beyond repair by the alkalinity in the bacteria, so we cannot guarantee complete stain removal. Older urine stains are more difficult to remove, as the bacteria has longer to do its damage.

Do you dry clean rugs?

We do have dry cleaning equipment, but we generally only use this on dusty draperies, tapestries, and small rugs that have been used as decorative wall hangings. Pet stains and the soils that are typically tracked into, or spilled on a rug are not removed with dry cleaning solvent and must be rinsed out with a water-based solution.

Do you do rug repairs?

Yes, we can do a number of repairs. These include repairing the side cords that run along the long sides of your rug, replacing worn out fringe, and stitching up loose side cords and areas that are frayed and shedding wool.

Do you recommend pad beneath the rug?
Yes, we do recommend placing a pad beneath the rug. The pad acts as a shock absorber as people walk across the rug and will prolong the useful life of the rug. We sell a pad that also has a moisture barrier that prevents spills and pet accidents from damaging the flooring beneath the rug. We often caution customers against using the rubber or latex grids that are very popular today. Sometimes these rubber and latex products actually etch (permanently mark) the surface of your hardwood and vinyl floors. Many flooring manufacturers are cautioning against the use of these products as well.

How long does the rug cleaning process take?

How long does the rug cleaning process take? The process generally takes ten days to two weeks. Certain rugs, especially pet damaged rugs often require multiple treatments and wool can take up to 48 hours to completely dry.

Do you pick up and deliver the rugs?

Yes, we do pick up and deliver rugs for most of our customers. For very small jobs, less than $150, we ask that the customer bring the rug to us as we cannot offer delivery services profitably.

Do you recommend stain protection?
Yes, we highly recommend applying a stain protector after cleaning to help you keep your rug cleaner longer and to extend its useful life. The stain protector that we use also contains an Ultraviolet light protector which helps to protect your rug from sun damage.

Do you offer moth remediation?
Yes, we can treat rugs with moth infestation. We will treat your rugs with a moth insecticide in your driveway before we load the contaminated rugs onto our vehicle. We then clean the rug and apply a moth resist product post cleaning. Most wool is treated with anti-moth products before it is woven into your rug but this protection wears off over time and will be removed with a good cleaning. It is a good idea to protect your rug after it is cleaned as well.
